The Legal separation process in CT is the same as the Connecticut Divorce process, but in the end the couple remains legally married and may not re-marry. There are reasons to use legal separation and not taking the final step to dissolve the marriage.
One reason would be religious beliefs, and the desire to follow these beliefs as much as possible.
Another reason might be to keep a spouse on an insurance plan while living separate lives. Such a situation might be a spouse with health issues that will require an extended period of care but the insurance is held by the other spouse. Though the couple can no longer live together, neither spouse want’s to leave the other spouse is very difficult situation, if it is not necessary.
After a couple has completed the legal separation process, either spouse can petition the court to dissolve the marriage at any point in the future without going through the entire divorce process again, because the divorce process has already been completed.
